If you asked most people what water is, they'd probably answer – H2O. And that would be a perfectly correct answer, just phrased a little differently. That's – water's chemical formula, which we all learned back in school, and not without reason, because water is the basis of everything, including our bodies, our environment, and the planet we live on. It's well known that a person can survive without food for several months, but without water – only about three days! And that alone says a lot about how beneficial water is for our bodies.
The Remarkable Properties of Water
Water is vital not only for keeping our bodies and all our organs functioning properly, but also for our mood and energy levels. It's not without reason that health specialists recommend drinking as much water as possible, at least around 2-2.5 liters a day. It's important to remember that we also get water from food, but we lose a lot of fluids by drinking coffee and tea and through physical activity. In that case, especially if you're physically active, walk a lot, and exercise, you should drink more water to maintain the right fluid balance in your body.
The Benefits of Water for Skin
As we've already mentioned, water makes up our entire body, so it's especially important for our skin too, which loses more and more elasticity as it ages — often simply because we don't drink enough clean water. Today's cosmetics industry offers countless products for keeping skin firm and smooth for as long as possible, yet the most important basics get forgotten, such as a proper diet for the body and, of course, drinking enough good-quality water. Speaking of the cosmetics industry, you've probably heard of thermal water, which often comes up in adverts and cosmetic product descriptions. This water – is groundwater whose temperature is often around 20 degrees higher than the local average, which is why it's often used to heat homes. Thermal water springs are commonly found in Iceland, where outdoor pools with naturally hot water have been built. These thermal waters are mostly found in mountainous regions, and are also common in Georgia and the countries of Central Asia. This water contains selenium, magnesium, and other trace elements that help protect the skin from harmful environmental effects; it's also often used to moisturize babies' and children's skin and acts as an antioxidant.
What Is Table Water?
Nowadays, when we visit restaurants and cafés, we're often offered table water or the option to order bottled mineral water. What's the difference? First of all, table water is simply water from the faucet, the same kind every household has at home. If it's good quality and clean, it will taste good and be healthy to drink too. Not every establishment takes care of its water quality, so you may notice a difference in taste or smell. Mineral water – is also extracted from boreholes, but it has very clear rules to meet before it can carry that particular name. It's completely natural: the law strictly limits any human intervention in the bottling process. It travels straight from the borehole into the container. In Lithuania, the best known are Vytautas mineral water and Birutė mineral water. Now, the most important thing is to tell mineralized water apart from mineral water. Unlike mineral water, mineralized water has already been touched by human hands, and its taste has been adjusted, with more or less carbonation added to suit consumer preferences, since mineral water has its own distinctive taste and aftertaste that isn't necessarily to everyone's liking. That said, mineral water is unquestionably the most beneficial, but it's important not to overdo it and to drink it in moderation, rather than in place of your regular household water, sticking to the recommended amounts.
Seawater
When it comes to health, you'll notice that water is an ingredient in many natural remedies. One of the best known and most popular – is seawater, which is recommended for easing breathing during a cold and for relieving or reducing a sore throat, irritation, or hoarseness. These seawater-based products are effective because they contain a high concentration of sea salt, which acts as an antioxidant. It's no coincidence that back in childhood, one of the most effective remedies was rinsing the mouth with salt dissolved in water; seawater, however, is more natural and safer, since the composition of pharmaceutical products is strictly regulated.
Water at Home
Water quality at home should be a priority for every resident, and the good news is that achieving this today isn't all that difficult. The first thing to do – is assess whether you're happy with your water's quality, taste, smell, and appearance. One of the most common reasons people start looking into water treatment solutions – is limescale buildup. Limescale doesn't have much of a negative effect on the human body, unless the dissolved calcium and magnesium levels in the water are genuinely well above normal. What it does cause is plenty of inconvenience and mess: appliances break down, faucets clog, water flow slows, and more electricity gets used. Expensive household cleaning products help only temporarily, and the situation stays the same, so the long-term and most effective solution is still a water softener. There's no need to worry that softening the water will strip away its good properties; you can also use separate drinking water filters, and specialists will advise you and install the equipment correctly.
