What is potassium permanganate?

Potassium permanganate is an oxidizer with disinfecting, deodorizing and astringent properties. Its chemical formula is KMnO4. It is sometimes known by the common name Condy's crystals. Untreated potassium permanganate is an odorless, dark violet or nearly black crystal, or a granulated powder.
